Acai Jungle Cafe

Did you know Açaí is a Superfood?

Superfood– a nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being.

Açaí palm– The fruit, commonly known as açaí berry, is a small, round, black-purple drupe about 25 mm (1 in) in circumference, similar in appearance to a grape, but smaller and with less pulp and produced in branched panicles of 500 to 900 fruits found in the Amazon.  – Wikipedia

Harvested in the rainforests of Brazil, açaí tastes like a vibrant blend of berries and chocolate. Hidden within its royal purple pigment is the magic that makes it nature’s perfect energy fruit. Açaí is packed full of antioxidants, amino acids and essential fatty acids. Although açaí may not be available in your local supermarket, you can find it in several health food and gourmet stores (often in juice form). A new product featuring the unsweetened pulp is now also available, and I highly recommend that you choose this form of açaí.

Have you visited Burbank?

IMG_0920If not, we recommend you make your way to the Açaí Jungle Cafe.  It is located on Victory and Magnolia almost.  This is next to Gracie Barra’s Jiu-jitsu studio who I was told is also the owner of both businesses.

On the menu, you can see they offer a variety of great organic options that is a great option compared to what we are all accustomed to seeing everywhere.  They have smoothies, sandwiches and more.  I personally ordered an Açaí bowl that included berries, granola and cacao nips.

At the Açaí Jungle Cafe offers a great family feel and reasonably priced compared to other places in LA that charge up to $10 or more per bowl.  Regardless, I feel like with our support in a business like this one we are saying yes to healthier options.

Mia – “it’s delicious!”

IMG_0921We vote with our dollars so whatever you purchase you are supporting what their message is as well as their mission to impact the world in a positive or negative way. I would actually go and purchase Yogurtland often, but after coming across the Açaí Jungle Cafe there will definitely be more support from us locally.

Check out the reviews on Yelp and if in the area don’t hesitate to stop in for a healthy smoothie or bowl.  They also have free water if thirsty and lots of other nutritious options for any age.

Advanced 2 Touch Passing Drill

How to set up the drill:

1. Set up 3 markers, cones or poles in a triangle 5 feet from each other
2. Player starts at the top marker and starts either left or right
(In this video he starts going right side first)
3. Player checks in to outside of right marker then check out again creating space for him/herself
4. First touch is with the same foot of the side you choose. If you go to the right, use your right foot.
5. Player must return the ball back in 2 touches
– First touch must be into space passed the marker in order to return pass
6. Repeat same steps on the opposite side focusing on using inside of the foot each time

This advanced 2 touch passing drill is great for fitness, first touch, passing, receiving and for all positions on the field. We recommend using it for kids ages 7 and up to challenge them.

Raw Organic Quinoa Seeds
Raw Organic Quinoa Seeds

Quinoa is a rich source (>20% of the Daily value, DV) of the B vitamins thiamine, riboflavin, vitamin B6, and folate and is a rich source of the dietary minerals iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc. Quinoa is also a good source (10-19% of DV) of the B vitamins niacinand pantothenic acid, vitamin E, and the dietary mineral potassium. The pseudo cereal contains a modest amount of calcium, and thus is useful for vegans and those who are lactose intolerant.[24] It is gluten-free and considered easy to digest. Because of these characteristics, it is being considered a possible crop in NASA‘s Controlled Ecological Life Support System for long-duration human occupied space flights.

Chipotle Quinoa Bowls

Ingredients:

1 cup Quinoa

1 can diced Tomatoes

1 can Black Beans, rinsed

1 cup frozen corn

1-1&1/2 tbsp Cumin

2 Bell Pepper, chopped

1 jalapeño, diced

3 tbsp Cilantro, chopped

Salt and Pepper to taste

1 cup water

Add all the ingredients (except the cilantro)to a sauce pan with a lid. Turn heat on medium high heat to bring to a boil, once boiling turn heat down to low and let simmer with the lid on for about 15 minutes until the liquid has evaporated and quinoa is cooked through.

Want to add some Guacamole to it?

guacTop with Guacamole!

Ingredients:

3 ripe Avocados
1/4 cup Purple Onion Chopped
1 Jalapeño, diced
1 juice of a Lime
1/4 cup Cilantro, diced
Salt & Pepper to taste

This meal cost me $20 to buy at the market ….every single ingredient on the lists except salt and pepper! And I even had enough to make this a double recipe! Healthy, clean, vegetarian meals can be affordable too! 1 pot, a few ingredients and about 20 minutes of your time and you can have your own healthy version of chipotle without the big expense of $10 a bowl.

Upcoming 2015 Fall Season

IMG_3232

Ready for the Season?

As the new season nears we are extremely excited to see new and returning faces for the launch of our upcoming 2014 Fall season!

We saw a great improvement in the players as the season progressed.  What was very apparent was the habits that our players created through nutrition and discipline on the field.   It was great to see friendships created on and off the field.

Our next season is going to be from 10/24/15 – 12/12/15.  This is going to be an 8 game season but packed with lots of fun things planned.  Games will be played at Revo Valley Soccer Center in North Hollywood.  There are currently 2 artificial fields that we will be playing on.  Game times will be from 1pm-3pm this season due to other activities being held at the soccer center.  Please make sure to keep note of this and adjust your schedules to be able to attend the games.

What to expect?

IMG_3241What our coaching staff and parents saw during the 2015 Summer season, we can definitely tell you that the energy is very high and kids have a great time! Our nutrition & wellness team off the field does a remarkable job to provide organic fruit fresh from local farmers markets in our area.  We also bring that “power water” and explain the benefits of drinking water over sugary drinks such as Gatorade and Energy Drinks (BIG NO, NO!).

  • Gatorade and Energy Drinks contain on average 25-45 grams of SUGAR in 1 bottle! 4 grams = 1 tsp…Gatorade contains 28 fl. oz = 42 grams of sugar = 10 tsp
  • All the SUGAR that we consume, 50% of that sugar is processed and directly sent to our LIVER…when the LIVER has been overloaded with sugar, specifically liquid sugar “Sports Drinks, Energy, Drinks, and Soda,” the LIVER becomes ‘fatty’ and leads to Mental Disorders, Systemic and Metabolic Disorders, and eventually Death.
  • Science has proven that SUGAR is addictive. Contributes to loss of control, higher tolerance for sugar, and increases “cravings” censors in the Brain, same as addicts.

We welcome parents, donors, volunteers to help us and contribute to our program.  Some parents last season were kind enough to volunteer to bring fruit, water and help set up or take down after the games.  It was such as great feeling to see the kids absolutely love the fruit and “power water!”

How can I help?

Monique helps JasmineOle Soccer is a community and always welcome parents and volunteers to come and do something great with us providing healthy options and educating our players on the importance of eating “real food.”

Our job is to come together and help each other out.  The coaches will do their best to develop your child on the field.  Our coaches off the field will take care of the education on nurturing the mind and body with the proper diet.

Yelp Review from Monique V. – If you want to put your child in a soccer program, Ole Soccer is the way to go! Ole Soccer is more than just soccer. It’s a helpful, fun, and educational program for the entire family. Our son has attended practices and games for 4 weeks now and he loves it. The coaches are not just focused on making goals but they are more focused on training the children to set goals and achieve them.
The coaches, Walter, Carlos, Ari, and Jasmine and the rest of the coaching staff are some of the most kind and caring people I have ever interacted with on any level, let alone as a coach. They are so patient with the children, it’s mind blowing.
If you want to put your child in a program that promotes a healthy lifestyle and is more like a family than a program, then Ole Soccer is the program to choose.

What about Nature Valley Bars?

According to the senior nutritionist with U.S.-based Center for Science in the Public Interest, Jayne Hurley, “They’re not health food. They’re basically cookies masquerading as health food.”

One 46-gram package of peanut butter Nature Valley bars contains 230 calories, 11 grams of fat, 150 milligrams of sodium and 11 grams of sugar.
