Agility with Passing and Turning Drill

Who can benefit from this drill?

Ages 6 and up (advanced to intermediate)

What is needed?

  • Cones/Markers (4)
  • Soccer Ball
  • Energy & Hunger to Improve

How to set up drill:

  1. Set up a triangle with 5 feet in between each marker
  2. Set up hurdle/cones next to side marker so player can jump back & forth over
  3. Have player start on either right or left side of the triangle
  4. Player starts by jumping over hurdle then returns to receive ball
  5. Basic step is to receive with the inside of foot
  6. Once player receives the ball, have them take 1 or 2 touches to the top marker/top of triangle then turn to cut back and return pass
  7. Immediately repeat the agility from Step 4
  8. Repeat this 10x per side and add more advanced steps for skill level of player

What is the benefit of this agility with passing and turning drill?

  • Amazing for fitness (If done with intensity the player should be getting tired by 9th or 10th rep)
  • Great for first touch
  • Works on cut backs or spins
  • Focus on returning the pass with accuracy and correct technique
  • Players must demand ball and helps with leadership skills on the field

We hope you are enjoying these drills and see the benefit of having young players develop and be challenged at a young age.  Ole Soccer is dedicated to maximizing the amount of touches each player receives at each session in order to grow their confidence on the ball.

Advanced 2 Touch Passing Drill

How to set up the drill:

1. Set up 3 markers, cones or poles in a triangle 5 feet from each other
2. Player starts at the top marker and starts either left or right
(In this video he starts going right side first)
3. Player checks in to outside of right marker then check out again creating space for him/herself
4. First touch is with the same foot of the side you choose. If you go to the right, use your right foot.
5. Player must return the ball back in 2 touches
– First touch must be into space passed the marker in order to return pass
6. Repeat same steps on the opposite side focusing on using inside of the foot each time

This advanced 2 touch passing drill is great for fitness, first touch, passing, receiving and for all positions on the field. We recommend using it for kids ages 7 and up to challenge them.

Advanced Trapping And Passing Drill

Want to improve and take your first touch to the next level?

Here is a great drill we use often for beginners as well as academy level players.  This advanced trapping and passing drill will be sure to challenge your first touch and accuracy in passing.

1. Make a square about 4×4 space
2. Player stands in the center of the square ready to receive ball
(If player does not ask for ball you DO NOT pass them the ball)
3. With 2 touches they must return the ball back to the passer/coach
4. First touch with the inside of the right foot outside the square then right foot pass back to coach
5. Repeat with left foot
6. Focus on the quality of the first touch and firm pass using the locked ankle technique back to you for getting that strength in the passing

Upcoming 2015 Fall Season

IMG_3232

Ready for the Season?

As the new season nears we are extremely excited to see new and returning faces for the launch of our upcoming 2014 Fall season!

We saw a great improvement in the players as the season progressed.  What was very apparent was the habits that our players created through nutrition and discipline on the field.   It was great to see friendships created on and off the field.

Our next season is going to be from 10/24/15 – 12/12/15.  This is going to be an 8 game season but packed with lots of fun things planned.  Games will be played at Revo Valley Soccer Center in North Hollywood.  There are currently 2 artificial fields that we will be playing on.  Game times will be from 1pm-3pm this season due to other activities being held at the soccer center.  Please make sure to keep note of this and adjust your schedules to be able to attend the games.

What to expect?

IMG_3241What our coaching staff and parents saw during the 2015 Summer season, we can definitely tell you that the energy is very high and kids have a great time! Our nutrition & wellness team off the field does a remarkable job to provide organic fruit fresh from local farmers markets in our area.  We also bring that “power water” and explain the benefits of drinking water over sugary drinks such as Gatorade and Energy Drinks (BIG NO, NO!).

  • Gatorade and Energy Drinks contain on average 25-45 grams of SUGAR in 1 bottle! 4 grams = 1 tsp…Gatorade contains 28 fl. oz = 42 grams of sugar = 10 tsp
  • All the SUGAR that we consume, 50% of that sugar is processed and directly sent to our LIVER…when the LIVER has been overloaded with sugar, specifically liquid sugar “Sports Drinks, Energy, Drinks, and Soda,” the LIVER becomes ‘fatty’ and leads to Mental Disorders, Systemic and Metabolic Disorders, and eventually Death.
  • Science has proven that SUGAR is addictive. Contributes to loss of control, higher tolerance for sugar, and increases “cravings” censors in the Brain, same as addicts.

We welcome parents, donors, volunteers to help us and contribute to our program.  Some parents last season were kind enough to volunteer to bring fruit, water and help set up or take down after the games.  It was such as great feeling to see the kids absolutely love the fruit and “power water!”

How can I help?

Monique helps JasmineOle Soccer is a community and always welcome parents and volunteers to come and do something great with us providing healthy options and educating our players on the importance of eating “real food.”

Our job is to come together and help each other out.  The coaches will do their best to develop your child on the field.  Our coaches off the field will take care of the education on nurturing the mind and body with the proper diet.

Yelp Review from Monique V. – If you want to put your child in a soccer program, Ole Soccer is the way to go! Ole Soccer is more than just soccer. It’s a helpful, fun, and educational program for the entire family. Our son has attended practices and games for 4 weeks now and he loves it. The coaches are not just focused on making goals but they are more focused on training the children to set goals and achieve them.
The coaches, Walter, Carlos, Ari, and Jasmine and the rest of the coaching staff are some of the most kind and caring people I have ever interacted with on any level, let alone as a coach. They are so patient with the children, it’s mind blowing.
If you want to put your child in a program that promotes a healthy lifestyle and is more like a family than a program, then Ole Soccer is the program to choose.

Who can join our league?

Half time instructionOur upcoming 2015 Fall Season is open to boys & girls ages 3-6.  We are focused on development from a young age.  Our job is to create an environment where your child will come and develop their social skills while working out and burn some energy.   Meeting other kids and parents making friends is key to a great community.

Ages: 3-6
Advanced to beginners are welcome!

Water and Hydration Evolution

Do you know the 3 times of the day we are the most dehydrated?

According to Shawn Stevenson, there are 3 times in the day where you are the most dehydrated.

shawn stevenson

1.  When we wake up in the morning
– Wake up and drink minimum of 24 oz (inner bath) of high quality water  before putting anything else in our body

2.  After exercise or working out

3.  After a meal or coffee

You should be urinating every 2 hours throughout the day to maintain the hydration in your body.
According to Shawn Stevenson, studies have shown that if you have just a 1% drop in your normal fluid level, you can start to have damage to your DNA!

When you’re dying of thirst, you’ve been dehydrated for hours. It’s all about water and hydration to your body.
DRINK MORE WATER!

Here is the link to the podcast from the Good Dad Project that describes this – CLICK HERE

Why Water and Hydration?

Ask yourself, why soda and juice? What are the benefits of what I drink?
sugar in drinks

Look at how many grams of sugar are in what you’re eating (on the nutritional label).  Now divide that number by 4. That’s how many teaspoons of pure sugar you’re consuming.

According to Quality Drinking Water‘s website, it is estimated that over 80% of our population suffers energy loss due to minor dehydration.

• A 2% drop causes mental and physical performance to be impaired

• A 4% drop and your muscle strength declines

• If you are thirsty you are already 2 to 3% dehydrated

• Mild dehydration slows the metabolism

A 15% drop cause’s death!
Alkaline may one of the BEST water to drink, read more.

Now what?

As you can tell, the benefits of drinking water compared to any other drinks are second to none.  We all must be drinking lots of water and high quality water as much as possible to sustain our bodies and give us energy throughout the day.
Parents – It is our job to learn and be informed on what is best for ourselves and our kids.  Make conscious decisions on what is best for our bodies and teach our families the importance of health & nutrition.
Kids – If you have kids, you must ditch the drinks with sugars as shown above and make sure we are providing them with as much water as possible.

Meet Carlos Charney

Ole Soccer Camps started in the minds of Coach Mario & Coach Walter years ago when they first became soccer coaches themselves.  The vision was to create a community of wellness through the sport teaming up with their soccer friends.  They always kept in touch with their friends on and off the pitch.  One of Coach Walter’s first friends when joining Valley United Blast when he was 11 years old, was none other than Carlos Charney.

Coach Carlos and Coach Walter have been friends for almost 2 decades now and as adults have teamed up to bring a something that will take Ole Soccer and it’s friends to the next level!

Who is Carlos Charney?

Carlos Charney is a San Fernando Valley native, backpacker, soccer player, functional medicine student,
nutritionist, practicing yogi, entrepreneur, dreamer and fellow human-being. At the young age of 16,
Carlos, aka “Charney,” was diagnosed with a debilitating condition called Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Multiple
Sclerosis, along with Cancer, Depression, Asthma, and Diabetes are all auto-immune disorders.

Champion at Heart

Carlos’s father was adopted and therefore Charney was the given name, which stayed with Carlos since
high school. Charney played Varsity Soccer at El Camino Real High School, in Woodland Hills, CA, and
helped El Camino win the Championship that attracted the attention and interest from multiple colleges.
Finishing the summer and playing soccer with his club team, Charney was confident in his vision and
abilities to hopefully earn a scholarship in soccer by graduation.

Entering his sophomore year, Multiple Sclerosis struck Carlos before the soccer season even began.
After just a few weeks into the semester, the common symptoms of MS such as: partial paralysis,
numbness in limbs, partial blindness, and general fatigue were all active and detrimental to his health.
Charney was forced to retreat to his home for the next years, and put-aside his dreams of becoming a
professional soccer player.

Several years of Intramuscular injections and therapy helped symptoms ease, as Carlos was developing
a phobia of needles. With no fair warning to doctors, the phobia of needles succumbed Carlos and he
decided to not medicate at all. After several years without medication, and the onset of Secondary
Progression seemingly coming closer with time, Carlos began to worry more cautiously and meticulously
about his well-being.

Listen to your body

Overnight, after being introduced to the work of Dr. Terry Wahls, and her book The Wahls Protocol,
Charney uprooted his diet (even though my doctor said it would not have any impact on my condition),
exercised with specific strategies, began focusing all attention to is mind and body, before quitting his job,
selling his vehicle (against the support of his family and friends), and backpacked across Europe for two
months, where he discovered deeper meaning in the new path that evolved for him.

Attitude of Gratitude

20140917_070757Though times were challenging and filled with hardships, Charney was able to gain so much from his experience, and realized how truly grateful he was for the life he was given. Multiple Sclerosis helped cultivate perspective, resourcefulness, and (most importantly) the power of choice, that empowered him to continue on a path that he uses to beat his MS condition.

The power of community, the power of the
human body when given the right nutrients, and the power of creating positive habits and relationships, all
catalyzed the recovery and discovery of Carlos and his message.

Charney has since immersed himself in the science of nutrition, epigenetics, longevity, and Ayurvedic
medicines to enhance and empower individuals and their families, so they can authentically create a
vision and life that is worth living!

“The chains of habit are generally too small to be felt, until they are too strong to be broken…”
—Samuel Johnson

Ole Soccer Nutrition & Wellness Coach, Carlos Charney can be found at Friday clinics as well as weekly practices at times bringing that energy and spreading the word about our vision in bringing the right nutrition to our players and families.   What Ole Soccer is doing is changing the way you will see life by changing your mindset on and off the pitch!

How to Increase Speed

What is the best way to increase your speed with and without the ball?

There are numerous ways you can do this, but below is one of the best soccer drills we found to increase your speed with and without the ball. The most important thing to remember when training is, “the way you train, is the way you play.” Do you know how to increase speed? If not, we can teach you how with this simple drill below.

How did we come up with this drill?

Through experience and combining different drills we have learned from previous coaches, we created this drill.  A different coach may already be using this soccer drill or something similar at training, but this is a drill we have been using for many years.

Short sprints vs. Long Distance Running

Short sprints not only increase speed but they also increase strength and endurance at the same time.  If you are also looking to get fit, or stay fit, your best bet is to do this drill.  It will give you quicker results compared to running long distance at a slower pace.

Here is our extremely effective speed drill you can use with kids as young as 4!

Turbo Drill

Turbo Drill Set Up

Equipment Needed:

  1. 5 cones
  • You do not need cones, you can use anything as place marks…NO EXCUSES!
  1.  Stopwatch (recommended)
  • This will help you keep track of how quickly you do this drill
  • Also helps for you to keep track of when you started and in a few weeks how fast you’ve become
  1. Soccer ball
  • We recommend using the ball so you can measure your speed with and without the ball when doing this drill

4.   Be sure to space the cones out like the image above, leaving enough space using the correct measurements for             best practice.

Ready to Start?

Now that you have your setup and equipment ready, you should warm-up before going all out. Here are some helpful tips on warming up properly – Warm-Up Exercises

Let’s Start!

Step 1

Turbo Drill Step 1

No Ball

  1. Start off at the yellow cone and run as fast as you can to the center cone
  • You can choose to go either Right or Left, in this example we chose to go right
  1. Make sure you go around the center cone
  • When turning make sure you focus on the first 3 steps to use the “TURBO” button inside you and explode to the next cone

Tip: Use little steps when turning that help you accelerate and change direction.

Have a friend time your start and finish or you can wear watch to start/stop your drill as well

With Ball

  1. Start next to the yellow cone and explode to the center cone
  • Make sure you dribble with the outside of the foot and touch the ball each time you take a step to maximize the touches and ball control
  1.   First time doing this drill, try using both feet throughout the drill
  • If you are dribbling with the Left foot, use the inside of the Left to go around the cone and proceed to the next cone
  • If you choose to use the Right foot, use the outside of the Right foot to proceed to the next cone

Step 2

Turbo Drill Step 2

No Ball

  1. Accelerate to cone 2 and use little steps again to go around and explode as fast as you can towards the furthest cone (3)
  2. Don’t forget to use little steps to work on change of direction getting away from defenders when you have the ball and to catch up to attackers if you lose the ball on defense
  3. Sprint across pumping your arms as fast as you can and your feet will follow

With Ball

  1. Using your Left foot dribbling the ball close using the outside of your foot with little touches to increase speed
  • If you are using the Right foot to dribble you will cut around the cone using the outside of the Right foot taking little touches to cut as fast as possible
  1.   Be sure to get as many touches as possible (Messi like dribbling) keeping the ball as close to your foot as you can.

Step 3

Turbo Drill Step 3

No Ball

  1. Going full speed towards cone 3 your body must get ready to cut and do a 180 around the cone changing direction once again
  2. One of the main focal points in this turbo drill with or without the ball is taking little steps when changing direction
  3. Once you go around cone 3, you will head back to cone 1 (center)
  4. Explode by pumping arms and digging into the ground
  • Try to wear your cleats to dig into the grass/turf for better traction

With Ball

  1. Keeping the ball close to your Left foot, use the inside of your foot to cut around the cone and head to the center cone
  2. Using your Right foot be sure to use the outside of the foot and a turbo burst of speed to the center cone (1)
  3. Whatever foot you’re dribbling with, don’t forget you can always use different parts of your feet to turn

Example: Ole Soccer likes to incorporate Futsal type dribbles (sole/bottom of foot) to turn or dribble

Step 4

Turbo Drill Step 4

No Ball

  1. When sprinting to the center cone from cone 3, be sure to take longer strides
  2. Turn and go around the right side of the cone to accelerate directly to cone 4
  3. Don’t forget to focus on the first 3 steps when going around the center cone (1) to cone 4 then take long strides once again for explosion
  4. Once you get to cone 4, you will once again go around it, doing a 180 with short steps while pumping your arms and sprinting as fast as you can back to the start cone (yellow)
  5. On the final sprint back to the start cone be sure to go as fast as you can and drive your legs using powerful strides to go past the cone
  • DO NOT STOP BEFORE THE YELLOW CONE!!
  • Remember you must pass the yellow cone then you can stop your watch to see your time

With Ball

  1. Using the Left foot, go around the center cone using the outside of the Left foot and changing speed to cone 4
  2. If using your Right foot to dribble, use the inside portion of the foot when you get to the center cone and go around changing speed to cone 4
  3. Be sure to use a change of speed from slowing down dribbling around using either inside of Right foot or outside of Left foot
  4. Once you go around cone 4 you will explode as fast as you can touching the ball with either the outside of Right or Left foot
  5. This last sprint from cone 4 to the start cone (yellow) should be the fastest because it is all out with no turns involved

Ole Soccer Tips:

  • Do this drill 3x with both feet
  • 3x with Right foot ONLY
  • 3x with Left foot ONLY
  • 3x with no ball

How to Develop Leaders

How do you choose captains for your teams?  Do you mold a player into a leader of their team?

Leadership qualities are taught by the coach of each team. The saying goes, “in order to lead, you must first be a great follower.”

mistakes

Learn how to develop leaders

We have all followed a coach at one point of our lives and we continue to follow even if we are leaders in our own way. I am a father and husband who believes he is leading his daughter down the right path.  Same goes for my soccer teams, I need to make sure I give my players the correct advice in order for them to make their own decisions on the field.

Visual Learners

I think it is safe to say that most people are visual learners.  We must see something first in order to understand it better.  I am of the belief that if you have players on your team that are not doing a drill or executing your instructions correctly, you must be able to show them yourself.

"Leadership" definition button

If you are a coach, be sure to raise the bar of expectations for each drill a little more each time.  This may be doing a certain drill quicker, more accurate, stronger, or just limiting mistakes.  What I like to do at my sessions is have a contest to see who finishes the drill the quickest.

Example – First one to 50 bells, toe taps, scissors, etc.

If you are a parent, be sure to ask your child if they enjoy the challenges their coach provides or if their coach challenges them enough. We all know our kids best so if you think your child has leadership qualities be sure to ask them questions.

Keep the drills fresh

Players tend to get complacent after doing the same drills over and over.  It is the coach’s job to keep the training sessions fresh and exciting to bring about the best in each player.

A great way to see who your team leaders are is to put them in tough situations.  A great drill I use is playing 3 v 2 or a keep away game of 8 v 4.  The team with the least amount of players is forced to work together to win the ball if they lose it and work hard to maintain possession as well.  You will see right away if there are leadership qualities in each player when they are up against the wall.

Alex Morgan

Who is hungry for the ball? Who talks and helps their teammates?

Everyone is a leader

Each player is their own leader and must learn to lead themselves first in order to lead their team.  Once your players understand to push themselves first and lead by example, they will in turn push each other to become their best.

As a coach and player myself, I know what good leadership is on and off the field.  Before you step on the pitch, you must make sure you are focused.  If your mind is on something other than the task at hand, you have already failed.

Kids can be all taught to be leaders and it is vital that the coach reiterates this message to everyone.  Parents must also instill the belief of leadership in their child to perform at their highest level.

captains arm band

Here are a few ways we found help improve leadership in our players

  1. Who is your favorite player?

  • What does your favorite player do best?

  1.  What can you improve on the most?

  • This will have them analyze themselves and realize they need to push themselves

  1. How good do you want to be?

  • You may get mixed answers but most young players will say, “be a professional soccer player!”

  • Here you explain that in order for them to get there they need to improve themselves and their teammates

  1. Are you giving it your all?

  • From 1-10, how hard are you working right now? Can you work harder?

  • This tells them they can and should work harder

  1. Are you a good teammate?

  • Is this a team sport or individual sport?

  • Explain that the objective of the game is to be a team in order to win

  • Win and lose as a team

Learn to analyze

These are a few questions you can ask your players or child in order to get them thinking differently.  The important thing to remember is that they need to realize where they can go by first leading themselves.

The beautiful game is beautiful for many reasons but one of my favorite reasons is to watch kids learn about themselves and grow as human beings.  It is rewarding to have a great impact on futures of the children and how they can become leaders on and off the field.
